Bird Rescue

I recently had the pleasure of working for one of New Zealand's wonderful rescue charities:

New Zealand Bird Rescue.

It was an amazing experience working with passionate, caring and hard working individuals who pour so much of their time (and very often voluntary time) into helping out sick, injured, orphaned and lost birds.

The centre in West Auckland is always full to the brim, and they see around 4000-5000 birds a year! The time I spent there was awesome and one of the biggest learning curves I have had in a while!

My many vivid memories include:

  • hand feeding Kereru,
  • taking in pigeon after pigeon after pigeon!
  • tickling the Penguin's tummy (daily),
  • stroking many a Morepork, being melted by those eyes!
  • releasing over a dozen waddling Petrels,
  • the never ending tube feeding of botulism ducks,
  • cygnet bathing in the sink - so cute!
  • wrestling and tube feeding huge angry Gannets,
  • feisty black backed gulls!
  • masqueraded faces, and pointy shoulders of Spur Winged Plovers - looking just like a super hero!
  • The singing Swan, who had a wing amputation and ate so much food!
  • The miraculous recovery of the huge botulism goose and his strong, pinching beak.
  • playing catch with 'Pita' the heron on his daily visits!

Please think of Bird Rescue the next time you are wanting to donate to a cause. They give so much time and money to rescuing, rehabilitating, and bettering the lives of NZ birds.

All birds - native or non-native birds are helped. The charity care deeply, and nobody gets left out :)
